Windowing

Definition

The practice of releasing a film on different platforms at different times to maximize revenue at each stage. A traditional windowing strategy might start with theatrical, then move to TVOD, then SVOD, and finally AVOD. Each 'window' targets a different audience segment willing to pay a different price.

Example

A film opens in theaters for 8 weeks, then is available for digital rental for 12 weeks, then moves to a subscription service for 18 months, and finally becomes free with ads.
