Day-and-Date Release
Definition
A release strategy where a film becomes available on streaming platforms and in theaters on the same day. This approach captures both theatrical audiences and at-home viewers simultaneously. Day-and-date releases became more common after 2020 and work well for films with built-in audiences who may not live near a theater showing the film.
Example
An indie thriller opens in 15 theaters and on Apple TV for rental on the same Friday. Theatrical viewers get the big-screen experience while streaming viewers who live outside those markets can watch immediately.
