Theatrical Release

Definition

The exhibition of a film in commercial cinemas before it becomes available on home video or streaming platforms. A theatrical release can build buzz and critical reception but requires significant marketing spend. For indie films, a limited theatrical release in a few cities can qualify the film for awards consideration.

Example

An indie drama might open in 5 theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a two-week run to qualify for Independent Spirit Award consideration before moving to streaming.
