Deal Memo

Definition

A short written agreement between a production company and a crew member or cast member that outlines the terms of their engagement. A deal memo typically includes the role, compensation rate, dates of work, credit, and work-for-hire language. Deal memos are simpler than full contracts but are legally binding. Every paid person on set should have a signed deal memo before work begins.

Example

Your sound mixer signs a deal memo for $500/day for 12 days, with a 'sound mixer' credit and work-for-hire terms. The memo also specifies that they provide their own equipment as part of the day rate.
