Direct-to-Audience

Definition

A distribution approach where filmmakers sell or stream their film directly to viewers without going through a traditional distributor or platform. This can include selling downloads from your own website, hosting paid screenings via virtual cinema platforms, or using tools like Gumroad or Vimeo OTT. Direct-to-audience gives filmmakers the highest revenue percentage but requires building your own audience and handling all marketing.

Example

A documentary filmmaker sells their film for $9.99 per download directly from their website using Stripe checkout, keeping roughly 97% of each sale after payment processing fees.
